Amid Duterte's latest tirade, bishop quotes Bible: 'Love your enemies'

Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David on Thursday responded to President Rodrigo Duterte's latest tirade against Catholic bishops by posting on Facebook two Bible verses.

"We have already faced quite a lot of persecutions in the past two thousand years of Church history. We always respond the way Jesus would," David said as an introduction to Luke 6:27-36, which implores devotees to "[l]ove your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you."

In a speech on Wednesday, the tough-talking Duterte wished death for Catholic bishops critical of his governance, saying his God would not have made him president if he were "bullshit."

Duterte maintained that he does not have the same God as the Catholics.

"I never said I do not believe in God. What I said is your God is stupid, mine has a lot of common sense. That’s what I told the bishops. I never said I was an atheist," he said.

"I couldn’t have made it in life even the barest that I before the presidency without God. Pero itong mga obispo ninyo, patayin ninyo, walang silbi ‘yang mga gagong ‘yan. All they do is criticize," he added. —KBK, GMA News
