Aquino on Revilla acquittal: Confusing, bewildering, unexplainable

Former President Benigno Aquino III on Friday said the Sandiganbayan decision acquitting former Senator Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr of plunder was not only confusing but could also not be explained.

"I am sure that if one were to study the decision once released, one would be confused and bewildered instead of enlightened," said Aquino.

"I am glad it is not my job to explain the unexplainable," he added.

Aquino said if anything good came out of the Sandiganbayan, it would be the conviction of Revilla's co-accused, pork barrel fund scam mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles and Revilla's former legislative aide Richard Cambe.

"That fact proves a crime was committed," the former President said. Both Napoles and Camble were sentenced to reclusion perpetua.

It was during Aquino’s term that Revilla, and former senators Juan Ponce Enrile and Jinggoy Estrada were charged for plunder and graft, and ordered arrested and detained.

In 2015, the anti-graft court allowed Enrile to post a P1.45-million bail due to his advanced age and frail condition.

Two years later, Estrada was given temporary liberty after posting a P1-million bail. — with Amita Legaspi/MDM, GMA News
