Duterte signs law increasing pensions of veterans of WWII, Korean, Vietnam wars

President Rodrigo Duterte has signed a law hiking the monthly old-age pensions of World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans.

Signed on December 20 last year, Republic Act 11164 mandates the increase of the pensions of 6,000 eligible living senior veterans from P5,000 to P20,000.

Under the law, living senior veterans who had not been receiving a pension from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) would be entitled to the P15,000 increase in the monthly old-age pension.

The increase, however, is not transferable to any member of a veteran's family or dependents.

The funds for the initial implementation of the pension increase will be sourced from the current year's appropriation of the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office.

For the succeeding years, the funds will be included in the annual General Appropriations Act.

“The PVAO shall prioritize the distribution of the benefits granted under this Act from whatever available appropriation that will be included in the annual General Appropriations Act,” the law stated.

The law shall take effect 15 days after its publication in the Official Gazette or in any newspaper of general circulation. —NB, GMA News
