Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena in Manila for state visit

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena arrived in the Philippines on Tuesday evening for a five-day state visit aimed at improving economic and political ties with Manila.

According to Julee Cabrera's report on Super Radyo dzBB, Sirisena's plane landed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 at 10:15 p.m.

He was welcomed by Philippine officials including Department of Trade and Industry Secretary Ramon Lopez, and Manila International Airport Authority General Manager Eddie Monreal.

Sirisena, who will be in the country from January 15 to 19, is expected to have a bilateral meeting with President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday.

A report by the Philippine News Agency said Duterte and Sirisena will discuss agriculture, economy and people-to-people engagement.

Sirisena is also expected to visit the Asian Development Bank and the International Rice Research Institute in Los Baños, Laguna, during his visit, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs.

The visit is the first by a Sri Lankan President serving both as Head of State and Government under Sri Lanka’s 1978 Constitution. It is the second by a Sri Lankan leader since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1961.  — Dona Magsino/BAP/KBK, GMA News
