Senate bet Toti Casiño eyes 'computerized' Congress

Information technology (IT) expert Toti Casiño on Thursday said he will push for a modernized legislature if ever he succeeds in his Senate bid in the May elections.

"Bilang kasapi ng IT [sector] gusto namin sana na i-modernize ang lehislatura mula sa mababang kapulungan hanggang sa itaas na maging lahat sa kanila ay may kumpleto na ng network," Casiño said in an interview on Dobol B sa News TV's Ikaw Na Ba? series of senatorial interviews.

"Wala kasing gumagawa ng ganong pamamaraan," he said.

Casiño, a former IT consultant for the Commission on Elections (Comelec), lamented the slow process of lawmaking, blaming it on the fact that the system is not automated.

"Kung ang ating mga kongresista, ang ating Kongreso at Senado, ay computerized, so lahat ng panukala ay mababasa, mayroon mga bagong tools tulad ng analytics," he said.

For this, Casiño said IT experts would be trained so that they would come up with a world-class system.  "Meron kaming paraan para maiangat ang kalidad ng ating mga mag-aaral," he said.

Casiño is running under the Katipunan ng Demokratikong Pilipino (KDP) party, which was only launched last year. He said they want to provide voters with "alternatives" from the usual candidates.

"Gusto naming bigyan ang ating botante ng alternatibong pagpipilian, kung talagang sawang-sawa na sila sa dating pulitika," said the former president of the Philippine Computer System. —KBK, GMA News
