DEBATE 2019

NCL president Arellano says PHL jobs given to Chinese workers should be for Pinoys

National Confederation of Labor (NCL) president and senatorial aspirant Ernesto Arellano slammed Malacañang for claiming that the entry of Chinese workers in the Philippines would not hurt employment opportunities for Filipinos.

Arellano is among the candidates running for a Senate seat in this year’s midterm polls this May.

Malacañang last month defended the entry of Chinese workers in the Philippines, saying the country lacks skilled workers such as carpenters and welders because many have gone abroad for better opportunities.

The government can only issue an alien employment permit if a foreign national is going filing a job or service that cannot be performed by a Filipino, according to labor rules.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo questioned such concerns and claimed the Duterte administration would also be concerned if it were true that only that only Filipinos can do a better job in certain than their Chinese counterparts.
