Robredo: Spirit of EDSA is for all Filipinos

The spirit of the People Power revolution that toppled the Marcos dictatorship belongs to all Filipinos, not just to the so-called "Yellows," Vice President Leni Robredo said.

"Kailangang alalahanin na ang diwa ng EDSA ay hindi lamang para sa mga tinatawag na 'dilawan'—walang iisang kulay o iisang grupong nagmamay-ari ng tagumpay ng taumbayan laban sa diktadurya," Robredo said in a post on her official Facebook page on Sunday, amid the celebration of the 33rd anniversary of the event.

She was referring to the signature political color associated with the Liberal Party. The most outspoken critic of the Marcos regime, Benigno Aquino Jr., was a member of the LP. His assassination in 1983 sparked the peaceful revolution that ousted Ferdinand Marcos and his family from Malacañang three years later.

Many supporters of President Rodrigo Duterte—a political ally of the Marcoses—have taken to labeling anyone critical of his administration "dilawan."

Robredo also said that remembering the EDSA Revolution is crucial in order to revisit the lessons taught by history.

"Iyong pinakamahalagang lesson doon [ang]pagpapaalala na iyong kapangyarihan, nasa kamay ng ordinaryong Pilipino—na kahit gaano man ka-powerful, o kahit gaano ka-imposible iyong tinitingnan na task, iyong pinaka-lesson sa atin ng EDSA, basta magkaisa iyong mga Pilipino, iyong imposible puwedeng puwedeng maging posible,” she said. — Dona Magsino/BM, GMA News
