PNP agrees with Duterte: ‘Int’l drug syndicates, patuloy na niyuyurakan ang ating mga batas’

The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Tuesday agreed with President Rodrigo Duterte that the problem on illegal drugs in the country had worsened.

At a press conference, PNP spokesman Police Colonel Bernard Banac cited the recent recoveries of huge amount of illegal drugs as the basis of Duterte's assessment of the war on drugs.

"Sumasang-ayon tayo sa assessment ng Pangulo na nag-worsen talaga ang drug situation in the sense na ‘yung mga international drug syndicates ay patuloy pa rin niyuyurakan ang ating mga batas, patuloy pa rin sila nagpapasok ng large volume ng illegal drugs,” Banac said.

“This can be seen with the recent recovery at the Manila International Container Port at doon sa buy-bust operation sa Alabang. Napakarami po niyan at maging ‘yung recovery ng cocaine sa eastern seaboard ng bansa,” he added.

Still, Banac assured the public that authorities are doing its best in preventing the entry of illegal drugs into the country.

“Ito’y tinututukan ng ating pamunuan ngayon na talagang masabat natin lahat ng paparating at maprevent pa natin ang paparating na mga large volume of illegal drugs,” he said.

Over the weekend, Duterte made the admission that things have gone worse in the war on drugs, noting that the billions worth of intercepted drugs as these were mere decoys.

He also admitted that it is difficult to guard the shorelines of the archipelago through which illegal drugs can be smuggled by international drug syndicates.

Despite this, Banac insisted that the government's campaign against illegal drugs is still effective.

“Di tayo nagpapadaig sa problema, sa challenge na ‘to. Patuloy pa rin ang isinasagawa ng pamahalaan,” he said.

In an ambush interview, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) spokesman Jonathan Malaya said he believes the effectivity of the drug war can be determined through the public's reaction on it.

“The fact that all surveys have shown that the people are satisfied with the accomplishment of the administration, that they feel safer with the drug war... it means we are winning the war,” Malaya said.

“I think that's the better gauge,” he added. — RSJ, GMA News
