Noynoy on honesty: Vote for candidates who'll keep their promise

CEBU CITY — Former President Benigno Aquino III on Tuesday urged the public to vote for senatorial candidates who can be trusted to keep their promises to the people.

Aquino made the remark amid Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte's remark that honesty should not be an election issue.

"Wala yata sa atin na papayag ng magkausap tayo, magkasundo tayo at pwedeng mong hindi tuparin yung pinag-usapan natin," he said.

For Aquino, government positions are granted by the people to the candidate, and it is only proper that they keep the promises they made the voters.

"Kung happy ka na hindi tumutupad sa pinagkakasunduan niyo, sa pinangangako sa inyo, edi karapatan mo yun," he said.

"Pero baka naman mas maganda na kumukha ka nung hindi lang paniniwalaan mo pero nakakasigurado ka rin na tutuparan ang pinagkasunduan niyo at pinangako sa inyo," he added.

Duterte, who serves as campaign manager for administration-allied Hugpong ng Pagbabago senatorial bets, drew flak after she defended her candidates, particularly Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos, against allegations of lying.

She, however, said she was only "helping" opposition bets when she made the remark.

"They use inaccurate, misleading statements and lies when they attack other candidates or President Duterte, and they know they are stretching the truth and yet they deny that they are lying,” she said.

But "Otso Diretso" candidates maintained that honesty should be a requirement for individuals seeking government positions, and that the public should hold them to the highest standards as future leaders of the country. —JST, GMA News
