Palace: Duterte studying MWSS report on water shortage

President Rodrigo Duterte is studying the report of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) on the water shortage that gripped parts of Metro Manila and Rizal province, Malacañang said Monday.

Duterte had asked for the report before he would decide on the fate of the MWSS executives and contracts of water concessionaires Manila Water and Maynilad.

The President vowed to make a decision by April 15 but Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said the President moved the announcement this week.

"Wala naman siyang sinabi. Tinanong ko... sabi niya he just received the report and he is still studying it," presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo told reporters when asked about Duterte's initial reaction of the MWSS report.

Duterte earlier lashed out at MWSS for its supposed failure to prepare for the El Niño phenomenon and said he would not think twice of replacing the MWSS officials given the surplus of talented Filipino engineers.

MWSS Administrator Reynaldo Velasco on March 20 vowed to resign if the agency fails to end the water shortage that has affected 1.2 million households serviced by Metro Manila east zone concessionaire Manila Water.

Manila Water, which has since apologized for the water interruptions, had said the problems of increasing demand and inadequate supply have been aggravated by El Niño. — Virgil Lopez/RSJ, GMA News
