Senate panel sets power rate price cap at P6 per kWh

The Senate Committee on Energy chairman on Sunday said panel members have set P6 as price ceiling for power rate, following the red and yellow alerts in the Luzon Grid this month, causing brownouts in some areas.

“Tuwing tumataas ang presyo, hindi automatically babayaran natin kung ano ang presyo na yun… Meron nang ceiling na up to P6 na lang ang babayaran natin,” committee chairman Senator Sherwin Gatchalian said in an interview on Super Radyo dzBB.

The Senate's energy committee conducted a hearing on Thursday on the energy situation. Gatchalian said that the problem in energy was rooted in lack of policies.

Thus, the energy committee came up with several policies in the energy sector and one of these policies is the price cap.

Gatchalian also ordered the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to investigate power generation companies over the possible collusion of firms after the series power outages.

“Hindi rin natin pwedeng tangalin sa ating sa isip na pumalya lang,” Gatchalian said.

After the hearing, the energy committee decided to push for more power plants, penalties for unreliable power firms, and better regulation to ensure sufficient power supply. —Joviland Rita/LBG, GMA News
