Duterte on ex-Speaker Nograles: May his legacy inspire politicians, leaders


President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday expressed his condolences to the relatives of former House Speaker Prospero Nograles for the latter's untimely demise.

"I would like to extend my deep sympathies and condolences to the family of Former House Speaker Prospero Nograles. I am deeply saddened to hear his demise," Duterte said in a statement.

The President, who in the past had a rift with Nograles, hailed the former Speaker's leadership.

"His legacy as a leader who used his voice to speak on behalf of the Filipino people will continue to inspire other politicians and leaders who are committed to serving their countrymen," Duterte said.

"May he find eternal peace and repose in the arms of our loving Father in heaven. It is also my prayer that the Lord Almighty ease your pain and that you will find solace and strength during this difficult time," he added.

Nograles passed away on Saturday at the age of 71, according to his son, Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles. 

Malacañang conveyed its condolences and sympathies on Saturday to the family.

Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo referred to Nograles as a "pride of Mindanao" who was "one of the leading lights of the political leaders in Mindanao.

The wake for Nograles will be held on Sunday, May 5, and Monday, May 6, at Chapel 1 of Heritage Park, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City. 

His remains will be flown to Davao on Tuesday, according to the younger Nograles. —KG, GMA News
