Duterte admitted federalism may not be realized within his term — Go

President Rodrigo Duterte has conceded that his pet initiative to shift to a federal form of government may not be realized in the last three years of his term, Senator-elect Christopher “Bong” Go said Monday.

Go, a former top aide to the President, said Duterte made the admission in one of their conversations.

“Yes, tanggap po niya,” Go said when asked during a press conference on whether the President has accepted that federalism may not prosper.

Duterte is set to end his six-year term in June 2022.

Go said the government should focus for now on its information campaign on federalsim.

"Para sa akin, priority is ipaintindi muna sa tao. Acceptability ng publiko muna," he said.

Duterte has been pushing for a shift to a federal form of government as a means to address national economic and power imbalances.

Past surveys, however, indicated that majority of Filipinos have little to no knowledge at all about the current 1987 Constitution and are aware of the proposal to amend the charter.

Duterte's federalism initiative has yet to pass Congress even with a legislature dominated by his allies. — RSJ, GMA News
