No Metro Manila mayors in illegal drug trade — NCRPO chief Eleazar

National Capital Region Police chief Police Major General Guillermo Eleazar on Wednesday said there are no Metro Manila mayors involved in the illegal drug trade.

"Based on our record, wala tayong mayor ngayon na sa record namin is involved sa iligal na droga," Eleazar said at a news forum in Manila. "Sa Metro Manila, 'yung 17 na mga mayors, nire-review ko, chine-check ko, wala. "

Even so, the police are continuously monitoring the local chief executives, he said.

"Lahat ng mga batas for implementation ay dapat nating gawin. Kung 'yung mga palusot or sinasabi nating mga illegal drugs and illegal gambling, ire-review natin lahat 'yan and we will enforce the law to the fullest," Eleazar said.

The Metro Manila police chief stressed the importance of good coordination between mayors and the police in the NCR and elsewhere. "Doon lang tayo sa tama," he said.

He also said no mayor, whether reelected or new, has so far requested for the relief and replacement of their respective city police chiefs. But any such request could be relayed to higher office for appropriate action, he said.

Officials elected in the May midterm elections have taken their oaths of office to start their term. Among the new NCR mayors include Isko Moreno in Manila, Vico Sotto in Pasig, and Francis Zamora in San Juan, whose poll victories ended political "dynasties" in their localities. — RSJ, GMA News
