Amnesty Int'l calls on ICC to expedite examination into PHL war on drugs

Amnesty International on Monday called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to expedite the preliminary examination into the Philippine war on drugs, which it blamed for the death of thousands of suspects.

“To the International Criminal Court, expedite the preliminary examination into the the possible crimes in the context of the war on drugs in the Philippines with a view to opening an investigation into the situation as a matter of urgency,” Amnesty International said in its report.

Following their report in 2017, the Amnesty International again conducted a research on Philippine government's war on drugs. In April this year, they conducted the study in Bulacan which they called the bloodiest killing field.

The London-based advocacy group investigated 20 incidents and interviewed 58 people including witnesses, families of victims and local officials for the study.

“The lethal policy that the government calls the war on drugs continues,” AI said in the report titled "They Just Kill."

The ICC in April said it already started its preliminary examination on the complaint of alleged crimes against humanity filed by the National Union of People's Lawyers (NUPL) against President Rodrigo Duterte for his bloody war on drugs.

Before that, lawyer Jude Sabio filed a complaint against Duterte with the ICC in April 2017. The preliminary examination on Sabio's complaint started on February 2018. —KBK, GMA News
