DILG to mimic Isko Moreno in clearing PHL roads as Duterte ordered

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Tuesday said it was ready to ensure all that public roads being used for private purposes would be cleared as President Rodrigo Duterte ordered in his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday.

At a press conference, Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said the effort would be similar to the one started by Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, who had ordered the removal of illegal vendors congesting busy areas like Divisoria and  Quiapo Church.

“Nakita natin dito sa Metro Manila na may mga roads na ginawang tiangge (at) tindahan ng vendors. Ginawa ring parking areas,”  said.

“So we will change that, katulad ng ginagawa sa Manila ni Mayor Isko Moreno. ’Yung Divisoria, malinis na ngayon, tinanggal niya ‘yung mga vendors,” he added.

Seeing it as a measure to decongest roads and lighten traffic in Metro Manila, Duterte made himself clear on Monday that he wanted the Metro Manila Development Authority and Local Government Units to reclaim all public roads in Metro Manila being used for private purposes.

For this, the President said he has asked Año to “suspend” erring officials.

“And again, I asked Secretary Año to see to it that this is enforced. If there is a mayor or a governor, or kung ano kang... sino kang demonyo ka, i-suspend mo Sir Año," Duterte said.

"Give him time and if he cannot... if he is not up to it, then pagpahingain mo na lang. Suspend mo na. Wala talagang... wala tayong magawa," he added.
