DILG backs Duterte’s call to reimpose death penalty


Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Eduardo Año on Tuesday expressed support for President Rodrigo Duterte’s call for Congress to reimpose the death penalty for heinous crimes related to illegal drugs.

“We will support the imposition of the death penalty, particularly on drug crimes,” Año said at a press conference the day after Duterte delivered his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA).

“Why? Ang nangyayari kasi ngayon, yung mga drug lord, kapag nahuhuli, ikukulong mo, eh nakakapag-operate din sila sa loob,” he explained.

During his speech on Monday, Duterte had expressed frustration that the drug problem “still persists” in the country.

“I am aware that we still have a long way to go in our fight against this social menace. Let the reason why I advocate the imposition of the death penalty for crimes related to illegal drugs,” the President said.

Año on Tuesday, likewise, expressed confidence that the reinstatement of the death would introduce a “change.” — MDM, GMA News
