Duterte to work with Congress for SOGIE bill

President Rodrigo Duterte vowed to work with the Senate and the House of Representatives to ensure the passage of the SOGIE bill.

In a meeting at Malacanang Monday evening with representatives of the  LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning) community, the President expressed support for a law that would protect their rights and welfare.

One of the proposals during the meeting was the creation of a  commission of LGBTQ advocates pending the enactment of a SOGIE law, according to Senator Bong Go, who attended the meeting organized upon the request of key LGBTQ advocates led by Boobsie Savares.

Also in the meeting were Bataan Representative Geraldine Roman and Gretchen Diez, a transwoman who figured in the news recently for being refused entry in a female restroom.

Malacanang said it is also planning to hold a national convention, together with LGBTQ groups to serve as a venue for the members of the community to raise their concerns and for the government to come up with policy proposal to promote and protect their welfare. —LDF, GMA News
