Pia Cayetano tells stores not to sell alcopops to kids, asks manufacturers to be ‘morally right’

Senator Pia Cayetano on Wednesday urged store owners to make sure that alcopops, alcoholic beverages that come in apparently child-friendly packaging, are not sold to children.

"Can you at least check that all products that are meant to be sold for adults are only sold to adults," Cayetano, the chair of a Senate committee hearing a proposal to increase excise tax rates on alcohol products, said at a weekly news forum in Manila.

Cayetano had earlier called the attention of the Department of Health and the Food and Drug Administration on alcopops, which she said were packaged colorfully and placed beside the juice section in groceries despite having alcohol content of seven percent.

To manufacturers, Cayetano said: "If your product is not meant for children but somehow looks like it's packaged, it's sold, to children, I would love to be able to see that you did something on your own."

Asked if she would call for alcopops to be pulled out from the market, she said she would like to give manufacturers an opportunity "to do what is morally right."
