LTO to sanction motorists violating traffic rules on railroad crossings

Drivers who violate traffic rules at railroad crossings will be strictly sanctioned by the Land Transportation Office (LTO), pursuant to the directive of the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

The DOTr cited on Wednesday the Land Transportation and Traffic Code which states that drivers shall bring their vehicles to a full stop before crossing a rail line to prevent accidents.

"Aside from the safety of the public, we also need to protect our rail infrastructure given the high capital cost of these systems," DOTr Undersecretary for Road Transport and Infrastructure Mark de Leon said.

The LTO and the Philippine National Railways (PNR) are in the process of establishing enforcement mechanisms to penalize errant motorists.

Earlier this week, a van crossing a railroad in Calamba, Laguna was rammed by an approaching train. Three houses and a parked tricycle were also affected.

The van driver said he did not notice the oncoming train. Five were hurt in the incident.

"Through an enforcement system, violators cannot just get away with their misbehavior. We will be able to determine those who deliberately and habitually disobey our traffic rules on rail lines," De Leon said. —LDF, GMA News
