Hontiveros asks Duterte: Why fire Faeldon when he is ‘upright?’

Opposition Senator Risa Hontiveros got irked after President Rodrigo Duterte expressed confidence in former Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) chief Nicanor Faeldon despite firing him for his post amid the scandal surrounding good conduct time allowances (GCTA).

"Kung ‘upright’ yan, ‘di mo yan sinibak sa pwesto. ‘Upright’ ba ang nagpakawala ng mga Chinese druglords at muntik na ng isang unrepentant rapist-murderer? " Hontiveros said in a Facebook post.

The senator even urged the President to find what the word "upright" means in a dictionary.

"Get a dictionary and look up what ‘upright’ means," she said.

Faeldon got the boot on Wednesday as Duterte said the former BuCor chief disobeyed his instruction to halt the release of convicted criminals through the expanded good conduct time allowance law.

Despite axing Faeldon from his post, Duterte said he still believes in the former penitentiary chief.

“Si Faeldon, tarong na nga tawo (Faeldon is an upright man). I still believe in him,” Duterte said in a speech at the launching of the housing project for landslide victims in Naga City, Cebu on Friday.

Several senators earlier said Faeldon must be held accountable for the early freedom granted to convicts serving time, including those convicted of heinous crimes.

Hontiveros earlier asked Faeldon when he would resign from the post, to which the latter replied he would not because he believes he is doing a good job. — MDM, GMA News
