LTFRB threatens to cancel, suspend franchises over Sept. 30 strike

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board on Saturday threatened to suspend or cancel operators' and drivers' franchises if they joined the September 30 transport strike.

‏LTFRB Chairman Martin Delgra III argued that a transport strike violated the LTFRB's Memorandum Circular #2011-004, which says that any protest that causes passenger discomfort was a violation of the franchise given by the government to operators.

The strike was organized by members of PISTON and the Alliance of Concerned Transport Organization (ACTO) to protest the government's =PUV modernization program, according to a Super Radyo DZBB report by Julee Anne Mae Cabrera.

The Department of Transportation, the LTFRB, and other government branches including the MMDA, and local governments had said that they had contingency measures in place to counteract the effects of Monday's planned strike. — Jamil Santos/DVM, GMA News
