LGUs, PNP, government agencies provide free rides amid transport strike

Local government units, the Philippine National Police and government agencies provided free rides to commuters on Monday as transport groups staged a nationwide strike to oppose the government's modernization plan for public utility vehicles.

Taguig City government announced it will provide free rides from 6 a.m.-9 a.m. and from 3-7 p.m. in the following routes:

The pickup and drop-off points for the above routes are:

  • C5 Water Fun
  • Gate 3
  • Bagumbayan
  • ADVERTISEMENT

  • DOST
  • Tipas/Napindan
  • Sta. Ana
  • Tenement
  • Tanyag

 

The Manila Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office also deployed transport trucks and fire engines to accommodate the affected passengers in the city for free, according to a report by Isa Avendaño-Umali on Dobol B sa News TV aired on GMA News TV.

Police officers from the Manila Police District also offered free rides on their motorcycles to affected consumers, according to Umali.

 

 

Free rides were also being offered in Marikina City and Quezon City, according to Ivan Mayrina's report on GMA News' Unang Balita.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, InterAgency Council for Traffic, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, PNP-Highway Patrol Group and other local government units will also deploy additional buses in Monumento, Taft Avenue, Quezon Avenue, Guadalupe, and Baclaran areas, according to Darlene Cay's report on Unang Balita.

Thousands of drivers and operators belonging to the Alliance of Concerned Transport Organization (ACTO) and Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (PISTON) participated in the strike on Monday to oppose the government's plan to phase out jeepneys 15 years old and older. —KG, GMA News
