Comelec: Voter registration turnout reached over 2.7 million

Over 2.7 million Filipinos registered as voters in the latest voter registration period from August to September this year, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said on Monday.

A document sent by Comelec to GMA News Online shows that 2,799,644 Filipinos have registered as new voters which include regular registrants and eligible voters for the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) election.

Female registrants outnumbered males 1,465,452 to 1,334,192.

Region IV-A or the Calabarzon Region had the highest number of registrants with 451,559 applications.

At least 942,964 applied as voters for the Sangguniang Kabataan elections, with the highest number coming from Region VII or Central Visayas with 104,368 applications.

The Senate last week approved on third and final reading a bill postponing the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections originally scheduled in May 2020, following President Rodrigo Duterte’s order during his State of the Nation Address in July.

If the barangay and SK polls are moved to December 2022, they will be the second elections held in that year, following the presidential elections in May.

The voter registration period started on August 1 and ended on September 30.

Comelec earlier projected a voter registration turnout of two million. — BM, GMA News
