DepEd commits to work with Congress for review of K to 12 program

The Department of Education (DepEd) has expressed willingness to coordinate with Congress for the proposed review of the effectiveness of the K to 12 program which was introduced to the country less than a decade ago.

"A dedicated review session will provide an appropriate venue to comprehensively discuss concerns about the Program and plot out corresponding solutions," DepEd said in a statement.

The department noted that issues regarding the K to 12 program have also been discussed in previous budget hearings with Congress.

Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano recently suggested the review of the effectiveness of the education system in terms of improving the employability of the graduates.

The K to 12 program took effect by virtue of the Republic Act No. 10533 or the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013.

DepEd spokesperson Undersecretary Annalyn Sevilla previously said that it is too early to judge the efficacy of the program.

"Right now we are saying it's too early kasi, three batches pa lang 'yung ating napatapos. And to say that K-12 is complete, we need to wait for the kinder to grade 12 na complete po nakuha ng bata," she said.

According to DepEd, an additional P650 million in the proposed 2020 budget was specifically allocated for the improvement of the K to 12 program. —Dona Magsino/KBK, GMA News
