PNP will comply with Duterte order to turn Navarro ambush probe over to NBI — Banac

The Philippine National Police will comply with President Rodrigo Duterte's order to turn over the investigation into the murder of Clarin, Misamis Occidental Mayor David Navarro to the National Bureau of Investigation.

"The PNP respects the decision of the President and will comply with his order. The PNP is ready to cooperate with the NBI to ensure impartial probe," PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Bernard Banac said in a message to reporters on Monday.

Navarro was killed by several gunmen who ambushed the police convoy he was in on Friday.

After a reenactment of the crime, Central Visayas police chief Brigadier General Valeriano De Leon said that the cops accompanying Navarro did not shoot back because the attack happened too quickly.

Speaking to reporters after an oath-taking ceremony in Malacañang on Monday, Duterte said that he wanted the NBI to take over the investigation into the incident, suggesting that the PNP might have had something to do with Navarro's killing due to the cops' inaction.

"PNP, anong ginawa ng PNP? Baka sila ang pumatay, sila 'yung malapit," Duterte said, speaking to reporters in Malacañang after an oath-taking ceremony. — BM, GMA News
