Classes may be suspended in some areas due to SEA Games —Cayetano

Classes from late November to early December may be suspended in some areas in the country where various sports events of the 30th Southeast Asian Games will be held, the SEA Games organizing committee said Wednesday.

In a bid to ease traffic in concerned areas, the committee is mulling to request for suspension of classes,  said Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano, who is also chairman of the Philippine SEA Games Organizing Committee Foundation in an interview on Unang Balita.

"Naghahanda din po kami ng memo kung pwede mag-suspend ng classes sa ibang mga lugar during the games. Tutal part din naman ng education ang sports, makapanood din ang mga bata, whether sa TV or sa bahay," he added.

Also, Cayetano pointed out that organizers are doing their best to keep the athletes' accommodation close to the sports venues.

"We will be securing the athletes from where they're staying to the venue. So pinipilit natin, like dito sa Metro Manila, na malapit na malapit sa venue 'yung mga titirahan ng mga atleta," he said.

The opening ceremonies of the SEA Games will be held on November 30 at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan.

The Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, Athletics Stadium and Aquatic Center in New Clark City, and Manila Polo Club were among the venues that will welcome athletes from our neighboring countries until December 11.

Cayetano sees the biennial sports event as an opportunity for economic and sectoral developments.

"It's a great chance na mapakita ng ating bansa yung development, maipakita 'yung mga atleta natin. Maraming hindi nakakalaam, all over the world, $600 billion ang sports tourism industry, so it's something that can really make an impact sa Filipinos, Filipino athletes, sports at tourism in the next 10 to 20 years," he said. —Dona Magsino/LBG, GMA News
