Palace ‘bothered’ by death of another PMA cadet

Malacañang on Monday expressed concern over the death of another Philippine Military Academy (PMA) cadet.

“We’re bothered by the death of another plebe who could be an outstanding military officer if he were able to finish his course,” presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo told reporters.

Freshman cadet Mario Telan Jr. was found at the bottom of the campus pool following a swimming class last Friday. Initial investigation conducted by the Baguio police showed no indication of foul play in the drowning incident even as they pointed to possible negligence on the part of the instructors.

Panelo said the swimming instructors should “reassess their protocols so that they can provide safety to their trainees.”

Telan’s death came nearly two months after fellow freshman Darwin Dormitorio succumbed to hazing-related injuries on September 18. Dormitorio's family filed hazing, murder and torture charges against the seven cadets linked to the 20-year-old's death last month. —LDF, GMA News
