DILG denounces vandalism in Lagusnilad underpass

The Department of the Interior and Local Government on Thursday criticized the vandalism on the wall of the Lagusnilad underpass.

In a statement, DILG spokesman Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya underscored that other groups could resort in other ways to express their views and social concerns.

"Nakakahiya ang ginawang pambababoy sa Lagusnilad pagkatapos itong linisin at ayusin ng Manila City government," Malaya said.

"While we respect the rights of these organizations to express their views and opinion, that right is not acceptable. Ang karapatan ay may hangganan at kaakibat na responsibilidad," he added.

Cultural group Panday Sining already apologized for writing a protest statement on the wall of the underpass, recently cleared of illegal vendors.

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno was irritated of the group's action as he also gave a warning that those who will be caught writing on the wall will be made to lick clean their writings.

Malaya then said local government units should strictly enforce rules on vandalism as well as use their CCTV cameras in their areas.

He also called on the Philippine National Police to apprehend violators, noting that vandalism is a form of malicious mischief under Article 327 of the Revised Penal Code.

The DILG official also suggested that groups should just be involved in clean-up drives, anti-smoking campaign, and other worthwhile activities. —Anna Felicia Bajo/LBG, GMA News
