Sotto slams SEA Games opening critics

Senate President Vicente Sotto III on Monday slammed critics of the country’s hosting of the 30th Southeast Asian Games.

“Sumobra na dunong ng mga pintasero. Pati si Ryan Cayabyab, Jimmy Antiporda, Eloisa Matias and also the group that directed the opening ceremonies of the London Olympics gusto pang pakialaman,” Sotto said in a message to reporters.

The Senate leader was particularly incensed with those criticizing the opening ceremonies and the pre-taped lighting of the cauldron by boxing legend and Senator Manny Pacquiao and Women's World Boxing Champion Nesthy Petecio which officially signaled the start of the regional games.

Sotto said that in the opening ceremonies of the London Olympics, the segment of the Queen and James Bond was pre-recorded.

“Walang umangal (doon). Dito sa atin reklamo ang mga epal bakit daw hiwalay at recorded ‘yung lighting ni Manny,” he said.

“I will not be surprised if these people are praying that we do not win!” he added.

Sotto also branded the critics as selfish.

Pacquiao’s assistant, Jake Joson, earlier said the lighting event was pre-taped in anticipation of the typhoon that is set to enter the country.  — Amita Legaspi/RSJ, GMA News
