Duterte signs law postponing 2020 barangay, SK polls

President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday signed a law postponing the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections, originally scheduled for May 2020, to December 5, 2022.

Duterte signed Republic Act 11462 in a ceremony held in Malacañang.

Because of the new law, there would be two elections in 2022 - the presidential election in May and the village and youth polls in December.

Incumbent barangay and SK officials will remain in office until their successors have been duly elected and qualified.

After 2022, the elections will be conducted every three years.

Duterte himself asked Congress to postpone the 2020 barangay and SK elections during his fourth State of the Nation Address last July. The barangay elections had been postponed several times since 1988.  —LDF, GMA News
