Ombudsman probing SEA Games organizers, Cayetano over corruption allegations

Organizers of the 30th Southeast Asian Games, including allies of President Rodrigo Duterte, are being probed by the Office of the Ombudsman over allegations of corruption.

Ombudsman Samuel Martires announced that he has already formed a seven-strong fact-finding panel to probe allegations of corruption among SEA Games organizers, regardless of their affiliation or government agency.

"We are into that. I created a fact-finding panel. Kapag may nakitang ebidensiya, then we will file a case on alleged corruption," Martires said.

Martires then said there will be no sacred cows in the investigation.

"Lahat ng agencies covered kasi isa lang pinanggalingan ng pera niyan eh. Hindi puedeng hindi kasama ang PHISGOC," Martires said.

He was referring to Philippine SEA Games Organizing Committee headed by Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano and some individuals from the private sector.

"Hindi tayo puede maging selective sa ating investigation," Martires added.

Duterte earlier said he does not believe allegations of corruption against Cayetano in relation to hosting of the biennial event, saying that he trusts him.

The Philippines' hosting of the biennial meet was initially marred by logistical problems of athletes being not able to secure their hotel rooms, as well as shabby food and transport services.

The government has allotted at least P7.5 billion for the hosting of the SEA Games.
