EcoWaste Coalition launches ‘Iwas Paputoxic’ campaign to promote alternative noisemakers

Environmental group EcoWaste Coalition on Thursday launched its annual "Iwas Paputoxic" campaign in a school in Quezon City to promote alternative noisemakers to welcome the New Year.

According to a report of Mark Salazar on GMA News TV’s Balitanghali, the campaign was launched in San Antonio Elementary School where pupils used different noisemakers instead firecrackers.

Most of the firecracker-related injury victims were aged four to 14 years old, based on EcoWaste Coalition’s data.

The cases of firecracker-related injury decreased by 35 percent, from 550 cases in 2017 to 340 in 2018.

Environmental health specialist Gelo Apotol said that lead, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide and other heavy metals are covering the air during New Year’s Eve.

These particulates can cause asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, and other lung-related infection.

The Quezon City Police District encouraged the public to report illegal use of firecrackers such as Piccolo, Super Lolo, and Atomic Triangle as they push for a community-level approach of enforcement. —Joviland Rita/LDF, GMA News
