PNP warns against carrying large wads of cash while Christmas shopping

Amid the holiday rush, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reminded shoppers to be wary of thieves that often target people carrying large amounts of cash.

PNP Deputy Chief for Operations Camilo Cascolan encouraged shoppers to instead use debit or credit cards rather than cash when shopping to avoid being victimized by criminals, according to a Monday report by Mariz Umali on 24 Oras.

“When using cash you would be seen always holding your money, removing your wallet [na] masyadong makapal. Usually ang nangyayari diyan is naho-hold up ka. Kapag cash, usually mainit sa mata,” Cascolan explained.

Even when using cards, however, the PNP official said shoppers still needed to be cautious.

“Ensure that you are the only one who would be able to see the password. There are banks already that send SMS messages so that you would be able to know that you really have transacted officially with your ATM card,” he said.

In cases where the use of cash is unavoidable, the PNP reminded shoppers to bring only the amount that they would need.

Police also reminded the public to ensure that their bags were always within their line of sight to prevent cases of theft.

Cascolan emphasized that the PNP would be on full alert from December 15 to January 5, 2020 and would be ready to quickly respond to any criminal incidents that may occur over the holidays.

“The enhanced managing police operations is our operational strategy that we basically use in the anti-criminality, anti-illegal drugs, anti-insurgency, and anti-terrorism strategies,” he said. — Julia Mari Ornedo/DVM, GMA News
