Communists planning terror activities during the holidays – NTF-ELCAC

Communist terrorist groups were planning assassinations and other terror activities during the holiday season, the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) claimed on Tuesday.

In a statement, NTF-ELCAC Vice-Chairman Hermogenes Esperon Jr. said they had received reports that members of the Communist Party of the Philippines-National People’s Army (CPP-NPA) had operationalized their Special Partisan Units ahead of their 51st founding anniversary on December 26.

“Our law enforcement and security forces have been advised to take appropriate countermeasures against this sinister threat to general peace and order,” Esperon said.

“We advise the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals or strange activities in your area to the proper authorities.”

Last Friday, the military said suspected NPA bombers had lobbed an improvised explosive device in Borongan City, killing two people and injuring 15 others.

The government’s chief negotiator with communists recently announced that peace talks could resume after a meeting with CPP founder Joma Sison and other rebel leaders.  — Julia Mari Ornedo/DVM, GMA News
