China’s mysterious disease is new strain of coronavirus, says DOH exec

The Department of Health confirmed on Monday that the mysterious disease that afflicted several individuals in Wuhan, China is a new strain of the coronavirus.

DOH spokesperson, Undersecretary Eric Domingo, told reporters that this is a new strain of the disease.

Domingo said this is the seventh strain of the coronavirus. Patients who contracted the first four strains experience cough and colds. The other two strains are SARS and MERSCOV.

“Mukhang hindi naman siya kasing lala ng SARS at ng MERSCOV kasi yung mga ‘yon, madaling makahawa sa ibang tao at merong mga namamatay,” Domingo told reporters.

Reports said a woman in her 60s in China who was also suffering from cancer died from the new disease.

The last reported case of the new strain of coronavirus was reported on January 3, 2020.

“Which strengthen the possibility na no human to human transmission,” Domingo added.

The DOH official also said the virus may have come directly from animals.

Domingo added that the country continues to monitor all incoming passengers.

“We are still strictly monitoring yung flights natin coming from China sa lahat ng airports natin,” Domingo said. — RSJ, GMA News
