NCRPO chief denies Muslim profiling allegations

The chief of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) denied on Thursday allegations that the police were profiling Muslim students across Metro Manila.

In a statement, Police Major General Debold Sinas said they are merely gathering statistics on the number of Muslim high school and college students in Metro Manila “in order to conduct interventions and programs in strengthening Salaam Police [Center].”

Sinas stressed that the center was created to undertake “close monitoring, networking and liaising activities with Muslim communities and other communities in addressing terrorism and lawless violence in their respective areas.”

A January 31 memorandum of the Manila Police District directed police stations to submit a list of the Muslim students in their respective areas.

Teachers’ group ACT slammed the document as profiling and Islamophobia, but the NCRPO denied such claims.

“[The] Philippine National Police conducts short ugnayan/dialogue, trainings, seminars and continuing education for our Muslim brothers that aims to establish a good rapport with the community,” Sinas said.

Makati City Police earlier came under fire for reportedly profiling transgender women in the area, an allegation that was belied by the city’s police chief. — MDM, GMA News
