Pinoy with no known travel history is Mindanao’s first virus case; Visayas reports 1st case too

Mindanao and the Visayas each recorded their first confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases on Wednesday, the Department of Health (DOH) confirmed.

The first COVID-19 case in Mindanao, identified as Patient 40, is a 54-year-old Filipino male who has no known travel history.

He began manifesting COVID-19 symptoms on February 24. He is currently admitted at the Northern Mindanao Medical Center in Cagayan de Oro City.

The Visayas case, meanwhile, is Patient 39, a 64-year-old male currently confined at Ace Dumaguete Doctors Inc.

In a statement on social media, the management of Silliman University Medical Center said the patient was transferred to the hospital at 2:35 a.m.  Wednesday, March 11.

“This patient, with a history of being in the Greenhills, San Juan area within the last two weeks, is one that is now managed with severe acute respiratory infection in our ICU.  As such, this patient is considered as a Person Under Investigation for COVID-19 following DOH guidelines and protocols,” the statement said.

The hospital said test results on the patient are expected to come out in the next two to four days.

The patient previously visited Greenhills, which is believed to be one of the hotspots of COVID-19 in the country.

The DOH is still trying to validate the places of residence of Patient 39 and Patient 40.

Among the earlier announced cases, Patient 25—a 31-year-old Filipino male who is a repatriate from the coronavirus-hit Diamond Princess cruise ship—is a Negros Oriental resident.

Though asymptomatic, he is currently confined at the Jose B. Lingad Memorial Regional Hospital in Pampanga. He was previously confined at the quarantine facility at New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac, where the cruise ship repatriates had been staying.

The total number of COVID-19 infections in the Philippines rose to 49 after the DOH recorded 16 new cases.

All the new cases are Filipinos, with half of them being senior citizens.

The DOH is still validating the areas of residence of all the new cases.

Patient 34 is a 72-year-old male currently confined at the Manila Doctors Hospital.

Patient 35 was a 67-year-old female also confined at the Manila Doctors Hospital. She is also the second fatality from the disease in the Philippines, the DOH confirmed.
