Checkpoints stricter on second day of enhanced community quarantine

Checkpoints at borders were stricter on the second day of the enhanced community quarantine in Luzon, according to Unang Balita reports on Wednesday.

Only health workers, supermarket employees, food deliveries, and those with health emergencies and flight schedules were allowed to pass the checkpoints.

Armed Forces of the Philippines spokesperson Brigadier General Ernesto Torres told GMA News' Unang Balita that soldiers are at checkpoints with police to enforce the travel restrictions.

Unlike on the first day of the enhanced quarantine's implementation on Tuesday, there was no more congestion of workers and motorists observed at some border checkpoints.

Also unlike the situation on Tuesday, motorists and workers were allowed to pass the checkpoint at the border of San Jose del Monte in Bulacan and Caloocan City.

According to James Agustin's report, there was no buildup at the area even as uniformed personnel thoroughly inspected identification cards.

Meanwhile, at the boundary of Cainta, Rizal and Marikina along Marcos Highway, the traffic of passing workers and motorists was also lighter compared on Tuesday, according to Bam Alegre's report.

Both the North Luzon Expressway and South Luzon Expressway were restricted starting 6 a.m. on Tuesday. Uniformed personnel set checkpoints at entry and exit points.

According to Jonathan Andal's report, motorists who were not exempted from the restriction will have to take a U-turn and exit NLEx.

On SLEx, vehicles going to San Pedro, Laguna were starting to build up at the Susana Heights exit at the time of the report.

Aside from the border of Las Piñas and Bacoor, Cavite along Coastal Road, several checkpoints were also set up in some quarantine control points in the area, according to a report of Darlene Cay.

After traffic problems on Tuesday, authorities moved the checkpoint at the Batasan-San Mateo Road to the corner of JP Rizal in Quezon City so that motorists who are not exempted from the restriction can easily take a U-turn, according to a report of Maki Pulido.

As the Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine took effect on Tuesday, hundreds of commuters found themselves stranded at checkpoints and terminals.

Most of the stranded commuters were ordinary workers who said they did not have enough time to prepare for what they described as a "lockdown." –Joviland Rita/KBK/KG, GMA News
