Robredo urges mass testing for COVID-19

Vice President Leni Robredo on Sunday renewed her call for mass testing for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as netizens rallied online for widespread testing.

The hashtags #NoToVIPTesting and #MassTestingNowPH trended nationwide on Twitter as netizens slammed asymptomatic politicians who underwent COVID-19 testing despite the limited number of test kits in the country.

Robredo said the Office of the Vice President provided the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine with P5.3 million worth of extraction kits to aid in the nationwide distribution of test kits.

Earlier on Sunday, the vice president called on congressmen to allocate a portion of their budgets for the procurement of test kits.

“Iyong pakiusap nga natin… iyong bawat congressman may mga distrito sila, baka naman part ng budget ng kanilang distrito [ay] para na sa testing kit. Para naman proteksyon sa kanya-kanyang distrito,” she said in her weekly radio show.

“Ang daming gumagala na siguro na baka mayroon na, positive na, pero hindi pa nate-test… Sana sa lalong madaling panahon, mapakalat na iyan sa buong bansa para mas maraming ma-test.”

The Philippines has so far conducted 1,516 COVID-19 tests, according to the Department of Health. There are 380 confirmed cases. — Julia Mari Ornedo/BM, GMA News
