Gov’t task force OKs DOLE’s P1.5B proposal for OFWs affected by COVID-19

The Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Disease (IATF) has endorsed the proposal of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to release more than a billion pesos for financial assistance to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In its Resolution No. 15 dated March 24, the IATF endorsed the DOLE’s proposition to immediately release P1.5 billion.

The amount will be used for financial assistance to OFWs and repatriated OFWs. The proposal will be submitted to the Department of Budget Management.

The DOLE earlier said it will provide a one-time P10,000 assistance to OFWs affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

To avail of the program, the Labor department said OFWs must submit their certificate of employment issued by their agencies.

Their application will be evaluated and processed by the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) or Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), according to the DOLE.

“OFWs are advised to get in touch with POLO in their host country if they are based abroad or visit the nearest (OWWA) regional office if they are currently in the Philippines,” it said.—LDF, GMA News
