PACC chairman disowns commissioner's call for probe vs. Robredo

Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) chairman Dante Jimenez on Thursday denied that the agency was calling for an investigation against Vice President Leni Robredo for allegedly competing with the national government’s relief efforts amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) threat.

Interviewed on Dobol B sa News TV, Jimenez said the call to probe Robredo, which was issued by PACC commissioner Manuelito Luna was merely his personal opinion and does not reflect the sentiments of the whole anti-corruption body.

“Wala pong katotohanan ‘yan at ang PACC kasi kapag may unang umaksyon, we act and we decide as one body. Kami po ay mayroon ding rules within the PACC” Jimenez said.

“‘Yong statement ni commissioner Manuelito Luna ay kanyang personal opinion lamang. This was not cleared to me nor to the commission,” he added.

He said Luna’s statement is irresponsible considering he is an appointee by the Office of the President and all help is welcome in this unprecedented situation.

“Napagsabihan ko siya na kung pupuwede ay ‘wag munang magbigay ng mga statements as a spokesman ng PACC… I reminded him na he is an appointed commissioner of the PACC by the president,”  he said.

“Welcome dapat lahat na tumulong in this state of health emergency under the Bayanihan To Heal As One Act.”

Jimenez also apologized for the misunderstanding.

“Ako talaga ay humihingi ng pasensya dahil sa nangyaring ganito,” he said.

Earlier, Luna said the National Bureau of Investigation should probe Robredo for “illegal solicitations, actions that compete with, or calculated to undermine national government efforts in this time of public health emergency or national calamity.”

PACC commissioner and spokesperson Greco Belgica already clarified the agency was not behind the request and added they are thankful to everyone who is helping the frontliners, including Robredo.

The Office of the Vice President later called the move as “ridiculous, inappropriate and so out of touch.” -NB, GMA News
