PSC offers more sports venues as quarantine areas

Aside from the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) is offering more government-run sports facilities to be converted into quarantine areas for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients.

These venues are the baseball grounds, track oval and two buildings at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila as well as the multi-purpose arena and the track and field oval at the PhilSports Complex in Pasig City, PSC Chairman William “Butch” Ramirez said in a televised briefing on Wednesday.

The quarantine facility at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, which can accommodate 112 patients, is expected to be operational this week, according to the Department of Health.

Other designated quarantine areas include the Philippine International Convention Center and World Trade Center in Pasay City.

Initially, the DOH said the three community quarantine facilities will admit COVID-19 positive patients who are asymptomatic and with mild symptoms only.

Ramirez said some 30 national athletes and coaches are staying at the PhilSports Complex as the majority of the athletes had been ordered to return home and follow strict quarantine protocol.

On Monday, the PSC reminded the athletes and coaches to observe the guidelines of the enhanced community quarantine after it received reports that some of them have failed to comply.

It also urged all national sports associations “to closely monitor the activities of their athletes and coaches to ensure their welfare and well-being.” —LDF, GMA News
