Philippines’ COVID-19 deaths now 335 as cases breach 5,000


The Department of Health (DOH) reported 20 more fatalities from the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and 291 new infections on Tuesday as the Philippines began the widespread testing of suspected cases.

The country’s COVID-19 death toll rose to 335 while the total number of infections nationwide leaped to 5,223.

Meanwhile, more recoveries were reported than deaths after a record-high 53 more patients recovered from the respiratory illness, bringing the total to 295.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire had said those who are vulnerable, severely ill, and healthcare workers will be prioritized under the risk-based and progressive mass testing

The government has also approved the deployment of medical graduates to aid in COVID-19 response for the duration of the state of public health emergency. 

Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. and Vergeire earlier said the country so far has 15 testing centers, 75 COVID-19 referral hospitals, and over 2,600 quarantine facilities. —LDF, GMA News
