Duterte to decide fate of Luzon community quarantine on Thursday

President Rodrigo Duterte will decide the fate of the Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine on Thursday.

This was relayed to the media on Tuesday by Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, Duterte’s former top aide, who attended the President’s consultation on Monday with health experts on possible actions the government might take.

During the consultation on Monday, the President asked the experts about the potential consequences if the Luzon-wide quarantine to curb the spread of COVID-19 is lifted, modified or maintained, his spokesperson Harry Roque said.

The President also inquired whether there will be a second wave of COVID-19 infections and how many will die from the disease if restrictions were to be relaxed or lifted soon.

The experts, which included former Health secretaries, had a near consensus that another extension of the enhanced community quarantine, which began on March 17 and will end on April 30, should not cover the entire Luzon.

Roque earlier said Duterte’s upcoming decision will be guided by science.

As of Tuesday, the Philippines had 6,599 COVID-19 cases, with 437 deaths and 654 recoveries. -NB, GMA News
