Pork supply shortage seen by end-2020, surplus in other agri products —DA

While pork supply is seen to be sufficient for the rest of the year and during the lockdown periods due to COVID-19 crisis, The Department of Agriculture (DA) is expecting a supply shortage by the end of 2020.

“May nakikita tayo kaunting kakulangan sa supply ng baboy sa katapusan ng taon,” Agriculture Assistant Secretary and spokesperson Noel Reyes said in a virtual press briefing.

Based on the DA’s food supply outlook, a 31-day shortage of pork is projected by the end of 2020.

“Pero ito po ay sinisikap natin na ito ay masolusyunan,” Reyes said.

The DA earlier said that the country’s pork supply remains a challenge, citing the projected deficit in pork arising from the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak.

To address a projected supply shortage, the Agriculture department will also intensify hog raising in ASF-free areas.

Meanwhile, Reyes said that there is a projected surplus in the supply of rice, corn, vegetables, fish, and chicken by the end of 2020.

The DA’s outlook projects that rice supply will have a surplus of 94 days by the end of the year.

For corn, the surplus will be 234 days; while for vegetables, the supply surplus will be good for 88 days.

For chicken, the supply will last 233 days ahead of end-2020 while fish supply will be good for two days after the end of the year. -MDM, GMA News
