Año: Show cause orders issued vs. 100 barangay captains

Interior Secretary Eduardo Año on Thursday said more or less 100 barangay captains have been issued show cause orders for their alleged failure to implement the enhanced community quarantine.

In an interview on Dobol B sa News TV, Año said most of these barangay captains are  from Metro Manila.

"Sa barangay captains, umaabot ng mga 100. Mostly dito sa Metro Manila..." Año said.

He also said show cause orders were issued against three governors and five mayors nationwide. The governors already issued their respective explanations on the accusations against them, according to Año.

"Sa governor mayroon tayong napadalhan na tatlo pero noong nakapagexplain sila at nag-adjust na sila ng kanilang mga EO (executive order), okay naman. sa mayors mga lima," Año said.

Earlier, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said local officials were liable in properly implementing the quarantine as mandated by the Republic Act No. 11469 or the Bayanihan to Heal as One Act which orders "local officials to fully cooperate in the cohesive implementation of the national policy to address the pandemic."

The DILG chief warned that local officials may be administratively or criminally held liable if they fail to properly implement the quarantine in their respective areas.

"Ang Pangulo kaya niyang i-suspend kaagad o i-dismiss ang mayor... mayroon ding criminal charges na puwedeng isampa diyan dahil violation ng Bayanihan Act," Año said.

Año said the office of DILG Undersecretary for Barangay Affairs Martin Diño would continue to assess if other local officials will also be issued with show cause orders. — RSJ, GMA News
