The number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections in the country climbed to 8,772 on Friday after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 284 new cases.

According to Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire, 130 or 46 percent of the new cases are from the National Capital Region while 116 or 41 percent are from Barangay Kalunasan, Cebu City.

As of Friday, there are 6,877 active cases in the country with 5,750 mild cases, 1,043 asymptomatic cases, 55 severe cases, and 29 critical cases.

Forty-one more patients have recovered from the virus, bringing the total recoveries to 1,084.

Meanwhile, the death toll rose to 579 with 11 new deaths.
