The issue behind the renewal of the legislative franchise of ABS-CBN Corp. is political, a legal expert said on Tuesday.
In an interview on 24 Oras, Atty. Rowena Daroy said the matter was political as franchise renewals fall into the hands of the House of Representatives.
“I heard some comments that this is all political. Of course it is political. Sino ba ang naglagay ng mga magdedesiyon sa Senado, sa Kongreso sa kanilang mga posisyon? Hindi ba tayo? And politics means power,” Daroy said.
“Naglagay tayo sa posisyon ng mga magdedesisyon para sa atin. Kung ano ‘yung desisyon nila, galing po sa atin ‘yun, in effect,” she added.
She also underscored that franchises are merely privileges and not rights, despite citizens’ right to freedom of speech.
Daroy also said that ABS-CBN may still contest the cease and desist order of the National Telecommunications Commission following the lapse of their franchise.
“Puwedeng humingi ng extension, puwedeng mag-apply for a provisional authority, at puwede rin pong hindi i-grant ‘yan because it is merely a privilege, hindi po karapatan,” Daroy said. -Julia Mari Ornedo/NB, GMA News
