1 more health worker succumbs to COVID-19; cases breach 2,000

The death toll among healthcare workers from the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) rose to 35 after the Department of Health (DOH) logged one new fatality on Monday.

This marked the first time since May 2 that a new death was recorded among health workers.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire on Tuesday also reported that the number of healthcare workers who have contracted COVID-19 has risen to 2,067.

The five medical professions with the highest number of cases are nurses with 759 cases, doctors with 631, nursing assistants with 129, medical technologists with 72, and radiologic technologists with 39.

Meanwhile, 643 health workers have recovered from the respiratory illness while 1,389 are active cases or undergoing treatment or quarantine.

Among the active cases, 1,026 are mild, 356 are asymptomatic, and seven are in severe condition.

Healthcare workers still account for 19 percent of the total confirmed cases in the country.

The Philippines has logged 11,350 COVID-19 cases with 2,106 recoveries and 751 deaths as of Tuesday afternoon. — RSJ, GMA News
